Eldorado - Poem by Edgar Allan Poe
The Endless Search for the Impossible
The Poem
In Eldorado, Edgar Allan Poe transforms the legendary city of gold into a powerful symbol of humanity's endless pursuit of unattainable dreams.
The poem follows a solitary knight who spends his entire life searching for the mythical kingdom of Eldorado. As the years pass and hope begins to fade, he finally encounters a mysterious pilgrim shadow, who tells him that the only path to Eldorado lies beyond the Valley of Shadow. The poem ultimately becomes a meditation on perseverance, mortality and the possibility that some ideals can only be reached beyond earthly life.
The Music
Because the poem is closely associated with the imagery of the American frontier, the musical direction naturally evolved toward a dark country atmosphere. Rather than adopting a traditional progressive structure, the composition follows a strophic form in which each stanza returns to the same principal musical theme, reflecting the knight's relentless and unchanging journey.
The instrumental section introduces another distinctive element of the album: a melody inspired by the traditional music of Epirus in northwestern Greece. Both Epirus folk music and American folk traditions share the expressive use of the pentatonic scale. Although these musical worlds developed independently, their unexpected connection creates a fascinating bridge between two distant cultures.
Lyrics
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old
This knight so bold
And o’er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow
‘Shadow,’ said he,
‘Where can it be
This land of Eldorado?’
‘Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,’
The shade replied,
‘If you seek for Eldorado!’
