A dream within a dream - Poem by Edgar Allan Poe
The Fragility of Reality
The Poem
In this philosophical poem, Edgar Allan Poe questions the very nature of reality. Beginning with a farewell to a loved one, he reflects upon hope, memory and the relentless passage of time. Like grains of sand slipping through one's fingers, life's most precious moments cannot be held or preserved.
Although Poe initially declares that everything is "but a dream within a dream," the poem ultimately ends with a question rather than an answer:
"Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?"
Nearly two centuries later, the poem remains remarkably relevant. Modern discussions surrounding simulated realities and the nature of consciousness continue to explore many of the same existential questions that Poe expressed through the metaphor of dreams.
The Music
The introduction is designed to resemble the gradual emergence of a dream. A haunting piano theme establishes an atmosphere that is both beautiful and unsettling before the song gently begins with the opening verses.
The verses become increasingly intense, expressing the struggle to grasp reality as it continuously slips away. In contrast, the recurring chorus returns to a softer and more atmospheric soundscape, almost as if reminding the listener that the dream has never truly ended.
The instrumental passages once again draw inspiration from Greek traditional music, interpreted entirely through modern instrumentation.
Lyrics
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
